Boks - A visual grid editor

April 8th, 2009 by - rtwood

This is a handy little Adobe Air implemtation of a CSS grid editor. Best of all, it’s free. Download it, have a play, and see what it can do for you.

Here is the marketing speal from the Bok site .

Boks is an AIR application (so it works on Windows, Mac and Linux) that provides a User Interface for Blueprint CSS’s framework. It’s been designed for those who think the Grid System is good but never really took the time to give it love.

It handles grid configuration , baseline rhythm pimpin’, CSS (with or without compression) and grid.png export, HTML layout and much more goodie-goodie!

A brief history of CSS

March 30th, 2009 by - admin

Who created CSS? In a sentence - Håkon Wium Lie and Bert Bos were the original authors of the CSS 1 specifications. However, this does not paint the full picture.

Tim Berners-Lee’s

The first tangible existence of CSS was in Tim Berners-Lee’s NeXT browser (fig.2.1). It worked in much the same way as todays browsers allow users to set their own styles and change how content is displayed.

CSS 3 Modular Release

March 5th, 2009 by - admin

Now eight years in the making, CSS3 is finally waiting in the wings. The delay was in part down to the necessity of fixing issues with CSS2. Hence, the release of CSS2.1. The release of CSS3 is not expected to take as long as the previous release. Faster adoption is anticipated as the specification has been broken down into modules that can be implemented separately over time.

“Rather than attempting to shove dozens of updates into a single monolithic specification, it will be much easier and more efficient to be able to update individual pieces of the specification. Modules will enable CSS to be updated in a more timely and precise fashion, thus allowing for a more flexible and timely evolution of the specification as a whole.”
(Meyer 2001)

The main aims of CSS3 are for forward-extensibility or ‘future proofing’. The new recommendations include abilities such as multiple background images and image based borders. Currently Opera, Apple, Safari and Chrome all share and implement support for the new specifications, however Internet Explorer is unsurprisingly last to adopt any changes.
