Below is a graphical representation of the basic advertising model used by The Box Model. It shows in a simple flow diagram the concept of “give and you shall recieve”.

About The Box

March 8th, 2009 by - admin

The Box Model has been created as an open platform for web based creativity. It aims to teach, inspire and communicate all things CSS. It aims to benefit from mass creativity and multiple avenues of instruction. It relies on you, the user to create the content you think others need to know and ask for that which you need to know.

The original concept is from a final year University project that questions the ability to maintain quality when user generated content is increased. We believe it can.

The Box Model is not for profit. Any profit made will be donated to a charity of The Box Model Communities choosing.

You can follow the development team on Twitter if you would like a more constantly updated guide to The Box Model’s development.

Why are we doing this?

We’re doing this because it’s something we felt was needed. Designers need something more instantaneous, something more ‘real’ to test their skills on. A platform to rapidly share their designs on. The designs are Wordpress based, giving them real world uses. All you have to do is change the CSS. Add your imagery. We’ll do the rest.

This is not a completely new idea. This is an extension of Dave Shea’s original Zen Garden ideals. We’ve just brought it to the community as a whole and moved moderation into your hands.

We’re not trying to compete with The CSS Zen Garden we’re merely trying to carry on the good work Dave Shea started. We just feel CSS now needs something more, something more immediate than the 6 monthly updates. He’s a busy man so why shouldn’t we help. Thanks for starting something beautiful Dave.

Who’s this for?

Everyone. The Box Model is here to provide a platform for everything CSS. It’s run as a community and is open to designers, developers and those just starting out. Get involved and start inspiring. You think something CSS needs to be said, then say it. We are the paper to your pen.

Why get involved?

This is all about teaching others. It’s about practicing and refining your own skills. It’s about inspiring. What do you get in return for your hard work? Nothing. Nothing tangible any way. You will however be credited for your work and you will get your name into a thriving design community. And if nothing else it’s a great way to procrastinate. Everytime you submit a design, add a tutorial or share some news, we’ll share some of our ad space. For this to work though you do have to become a member. It’s free.

What you need to do…

Make something beautiful. Make something clever. Or just make something you…

This site is about showcasing what can be done with CSS. You can use CSS2 and even CSS3, as long as you are ware that you still have to make allowances for all of those still slave to Microsoft I.E. You do not have to create something that has to display accurately in I.E.6 as we here at The Box Model are actively encouraging the death it. Facebook don’t support it. So why should you? Obviously the site should look the same in all the other browsers but that is up to you to police. Your trying to get recognition for your work so you should probably make it as stunning as possible for as many as possible. Just like a real web project.

The easiest way for you to create a basic design is to fins your favorite Wordpress theme. Perhaps one you created for your blog. Tweak the design to match our HTML (which can be obtained by viewing the source of this page) and upload it with a screen shot of the design. We’ll do the rest.

You should respect any copyright or other bits and pieces you may upset people with. This is an example of mass creativity and as such we can’t take responsibility for what some one else is doing. You should try and use your own work where possible.

At all times, even after submission, you still own your own work. If you wish other people to use your style sheets or art work, that’s fine with us. In the same breath we want to remind everyone else - don’t take without asking. These people are working for recognition and to provide others with inspiration. Not to line your pockets.

Browser Support

March 7th, 2009 by - admin

The Box Model does not actively neglect any browser. We do however vehemently champion the world-wide decommissioning of IE6. We would suggest any user using IE6 and experiencing problems with either functionality or layout to download one of the free and really rather better browsers offered. These are Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox. If nothing else, it makes you cooler. Oh and it supports the development of open innovation and vindicates the benefits offered by communities. Which is the exact undercurrent behind The Box Model.
